霧島神宮
鹿児島・宮崎の県境に広がる霧島連山。そのふもとに静かに佇むのが、古来より「天孫降臨」の地として知られる霧島神宮です。私は先日ここを訪れ、自然と神話が溶け合う不思議な空気を肌で感じてきました。
鳥居をくぐり、長い参道を歩いていると、澄んだ空気と木々のざわめきに包まれ、まるで時間がゆっくり流れていくような感覚に。樹齢800年を超える大きな御神木の杉に出会ったときは、その存在感に思わず足を止め、深呼吸をしてしまいました。
鮮やかな朱色の社殿は、江戸時代に島津家によって再建されたもの。細部まで施された装飾の美しさは「西の日光」と称されるほどで、歴史を感じながらも心が華やぐひとときでした。
さらに印象的だったのは、社殿から望む霧島の山並み。季節ごとに違う表情を見せる景色は、まるで神様が描いた絵画のよう。春には桜、夏には深い緑、秋には燃えるような紅葉、そして冬には澄み切った空気と霧が神秘的な雰囲気を作り出します。どの季節に訪れても、新しい魅力と出会える場所だと思います。
参拝を終えると、心がすっと軽くなったような感覚に。日常の忙しさを忘れ、自然と向き合い、自分自身を見つめ直す時間を与えてくれるのが、霧島神宮の大きな魅力だと感じました。

Kirishima Shrine, Where the Myth of Tenson Kōrin Lives On
At the foot of the majestic Kirishima mountain range, straddling the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki, lies Kirishima Shrine, a sacred place long known as the site of Japan’s legendary Tenson Kōrin—the descent of the heavenly grandson. I had the chance to visit recently, and was deeply moved by the way nature and mythology blend seamlessly here.
Walking through the torii gate and along the long approach, I was embraced by the pure mountain air and the gentle rustling of trees. It felt as though time itself had slowed down. When I came across the giant sacred cedar, said to be more than 800 years old, its overwhelming presence made me stop in awe and take a deep breath.
The vivid vermilion shrine buildings, rebuilt in the Edo period by the Shimazu clan, are breathtaking in their ornate detail. Their beauty has earned the shrine the nickname “Nikko of the West,” and it was impossible not to feel uplifted while admiring them.
What struck me most, however, was the view of the Kirishima mountains from the shrine grounds. Each season paints a new masterpiece: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fiery red foliage in autumn, and the crisp, mystical mists of winter. No matter when you visit, you’re sure to encounter a different kind of beauty.
After offering my prayers, I felt an incredible sense of calm and lightness. Kirishima Shrine isn’t just a place of worship—it’s a sanctuary where you can step away from the busyness of daily life, reconnect with nature, and reflect on yourself.
If you ever travel through Kagoshima or Miyazaki, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit. With its rich history, natural beauty, and deep ties to Japan’s mythology, Kirishima Shrine is a place that will surely leave your heart enriched.
