世界遺産の庭園「仙巌園」
鹿児島市の中心部から車で20分ほど。錦江湾を望む吉野町にある「仙巌園（せんがんえん）」は、桜島を築山、錦江湾を池に見立てて造られた大名庭園です。訪れた瞬間、その雄大な景観に思わず息をのみました。
庭園を散策していると、歩くたびに新しい発見があります。私が訪れた日は梅が咲き始めていて、爽やかな香りが風に漂い、春の訪れを感じさせてくれました。春は桜、夏は緑陰、秋は菊、冬は梅と、四季折々の花が庭園を彩り、どの季節に訪れても楽しめる場所です。
園内には、猫の瞳で時間を計ったことから祀られた「猫神社」や、江戸時代から残る「錫門」、日本初のガス灯実験に使われた「鶴灯籠」など、ユニークな史跡が点在しています。散策の途中で立ち寄ると、歴史がぐっと身近に感じられるのが魅力です。
さらに、隣接する「尚古集成館」では島津家の歴史や明治期の近代化について学ぶことができ、薩摩切子の工房やショップでは美しい工芸品にも出会えます。観光だけでなく、文化体験や学びの場としても充実しているのが仙巌園の魅力だと感じました。
2015年には「明治日本の産業革命遺産」として世界文化遺産に登録され、国際的にも高い評価を受けています。

Just about a 20-minute drive from the center of Kagoshima City lies Sengan-en, a grand feudal lord’s garden in Yoshino Town. Designed with Sakurajima as its borrowed mountain and Kinko Bay as its pond, the breathtaking scenery will leave you speechless the moment you arrive.
As you stroll through the garden, you’ll notice something new at every step. When I visited, the plum blossoms had just begun to bloom, and their refreshing fragrance drifted through the air, heralding the arrival of spring. In fact, each season offers something different: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, chrysanthemums in autumn, and plum blossoms in winter. No matter when you visit, the garden is full of charm.
Scattered throughout the grounds are unique historical sites such as the Neko Shrine, dedicated because cats’ eyes were once used to tell time, the Shakugamon Gate, a remnant of the Edo period, and the Tsuru Lantern, where Japan’s first gas lamp experiment took place. Stopping by these spots makes the history feel surprisingly close.
Right next to the garden, the Shoko Shuseikan Museum offers insights into the Shimazu family’s history and Japan’s modernization in the Meiji era. You can also explore workshops and shops of Satsuma Kiriko cut glass, where exquisite craftsmanship comes to life. More than just sightseeing, Sengan-en is a place where you can learn, experience, and connect with culture.
In 2015, Sengan-en was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage: Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution, earning worldwide recognition.
