静寂の庭に歴史が息づく月窓亭（A Garden of Serenity, Where History Breathes – Gessoutei）

月窓亭

南国・種子島の中心、西之表市の高台に佇む「月窓亭（げっそうてい）」。
その静かな庭園には、時を超えて人々の暮らしと文化が息づいています。

月窓亭の始まりは、江戸時代の寛政7年（1795年）、道潔（どうけつ）によって建てられた一邸宅でした。やがて、実業家で思想家の羽生慎翁（はにゅう しんおう）と、その妻であり生け花の名手・八重が暮らし、花と人とを結ぶ文化の場となります。夫妻が残した「心の豊かさ」は今も邸内に感じられ、訪れる人をやさしく包み込みます。

さらに明治時代には、旧藩主・種子島守時公の邸宅としても用いられました。武家の格式と庶民の暮らし、近代の思想が重なり合い、月窓亭は種子島の歴史そのものを映す舞台となったのです。

平成22年（2010年）には「赤尾木城文化伝承館 月窓亭」として一般公開され、伝統建築の美、往時を偲ばせる調度品、四季折々の表情を見せる庭園、そして羽生慎翁といけばなの関わりを紹介する場として、文化発信の拠点となりました。

現在は耐震改修工事のため休館していますが、再び扉が開かれる日には、より多くの人々に安心して訪れていただけるでしょう。
静けさの中に息づく歴史と文化。月窓亭は、訪れる人に穏やかなひとときを与えてくれる場所です。

A Garden of Serenity, Where History Breathes – Gessoutei

On the island of Tanegashima, in the heart of Nishinoomote City, lies Gessoutei, a traditional residence where history and culture continue to breathe quietly within its serene gardens.

Originally built in 1795 by Dōketsu during the late Edo period, this refined residence later became the home of Hanyū Shin’ō, a businessman and thinker, and his wife Yae, an accomplished practitioner of ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement). Their legacy of beauty and cultural spirit still lingers in the house, offering visitors a glimpse into the refined life of past generations.

In the Meiji era, the residence served as the home of Lord Tanegashima Moritoki, the former feudal lord of the island. Thus, Gessoutei stands as a unique place where the dignity of the samurai class, the creativity of modern thinkers, and the traditions of daily life intersect.

Since 2010, it has been open to the public as part of the Akaogi Castle Cultural Heritage Center. Visitors can admire the elegance of samurai-era architecture, preserved furnishings, seasonal gardens, and exhibits on Hanyū Shin’ō’s connection to ikebana.

Although currently closed for seismic retrofitting, Gessoutei awaits the day it will once again welcome visitors with its calm beauty and timeless atmosphere. It is more than a historical site—it is a place where the soul of Tanegashima quietly speaks.
